The Motor Decisions Matter (MDM) campaign is a national public awareness campaign to increase awareness of motor management opportunities, increase demand for NEMA Premium® motors & best practice motor repair, and encourage the market to engage in motor planning. The Campaign was launched in 2001 by a diverse group of stakeholders including energy efficiency program administrators, motor manufacturers, sales/service centers, and trade associations.

Summary of Efficiency Programs for Motors & Motor Systems

In May, the Consortium for Energy Efficiency published the 2009 Motors & Motor Systems Program Summary (XLS 111 KB). The Summary, which is presented as an Excel spreadsheet, provides information on efficiency programs that offer incentives for motors (1-200hp and above) & motor systems (ASDs, compressed air, pumps, fans) in industrial and commercial facilities. The Summary provides program participation information to indicate whether incentives are targeted upstream (towards vendors) or downstream (towards customers), as well as whether custom programs are offered.

The Summary also includes convenient links to the appropriate program web pages for more detailed information, and indicates whether the program offers additional opportunities related to motors, such as education, training, technical services, or financial assistance.

The Summary is available on the Tools page on the MDM web site.

DOE Resources: Funding Opportunities, State Partnerships, & More

Recovery Act Funding Opportunities

In June, DOE announced that $256 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will be targeted to the industrial sector for energy efficiency improvements.

ARRA funds will focus on three main types of projects:

  • $156 Million for Combined Heat and Power (CHP), District Energy Systems, Waste Energy Recovery Systems, and Efficient Industrial Equipment - Targets projects that use proven efficiency measures.
  • $50 Million for Improved Energy Efficiency for Information and Communication Technology - Targets the information and communication technology sector for research, development, and demonstration projects for new energy efficiency technologies.
  • $50 Million for Advanced Materials in Support of Advanced Clean Energy Technologies and Energy-Intensive Processes - Targets research, development, and demonstration projects for advanced industrial materials.

The DOE Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) web site will be updated with information on ARRA funding as it becomes available. Additional DOE information related to the ARRA is available on the DOE Recovery and Reinvestment Web site.

DOE Launches Save Energy Now State Partnerships Web Site

DOE has launched the new Save Energy Now State Partnerships Web site which provides information related to industrial energy use for each state and basic statistics on state population, energy use, and state industry economic data. Each state web page includes a list of DOE regional and state energy office contacts, a searchable incentives database and state project portfolio, and a map of ITP activities in the state. Also included is information about upcoming ITP events and trainings in the state, funding opportunities, and case studies highlighting energy savings assessments.

Other DOE Resources

ITP recently issued a new report on 258 large plant assessments done in 2007. The report, Results from the U.S. DOE 2007 Save Energy Now Assessment Initiative, is available as a summary (PDF 879 KB) or as the full report (PDF 607 KB). The large plant assessments conducted in 2007 resulted in savings of $244 million in annual energy costs and 36 TBtu in annual source-energy. The report also includes information on changes to the DOE assessment process, compares the 2007 results to 2006 data, summarizes key results, and offers an evaluation of implementation results.

New case studies are available to download from the ITP Save Energy Now program web site. The case studies highlight companies that have saved energy by implementing energy efficiency measures through Save Energy Now assessments and by using ITP software tools. They also offer energy-saving recommendations and information on utility partnerships. Case studies are easily found as they are sorted by company name, industry type, system area, utility, and data centers.

    MDM in the News

Maintenance Technology magazine's bimonthly column "Boosting Your Bottom Line" highlights contributions from MDM staff. The June column, Your Motor Inventory: A Cost-Effective Resource, focused on the cost and energy saving opportunities associated with motor management, and suggested conducting a survey of your motor inventory as a good place to start. It also highlighted resources for industrial plant managers who are interested in opportunities to save money, save energy, and increase productivity.
