The Motor Decisions MatterSM (MDM) campaign is a national public awareness campaign to increase awareness of motor management opportunities, increase demand for NEMA Premium® motors & best practice motor repair, and encourage the market to engage in motor planning. The Campaign was launched in 2001 by a diverse group of stakeholders including energy efficiency program administrators, motor manufacturers, sales/service centers, and trade associations.

DOE & EPA Release New Tools for Industrial Users

EPA Extends ENERGY STAR® to Glass, Food Processing Facilities

In September, EPA announced that ENERGY STAR Energy Performance Indicators (EPIs) will be extended to glass manufacturing and food processing facilities. EPIs are rating tools to help assess a facility's energy efficiency relative to others in the industry. The new EPIs will generate a 1-100 energy performance benchmark score for participating facilities, based on utility bill and facility size and process data. The 1-100 benchmark score will indicate to facility managers how their building is performing relative to other facilities of similar size and process, and recommend areas to make improvements. The best performing facilities will be eligible to receive the ENERGY STAR award, recognizing their top-tier energy performance.

The new facility types include glass manufacturing (flat and containers), and frozen foods processing. EPA estimates that up to $900 million in energy costs could be saved annually if all such manufacturing facilities were to achieve ENERGY STAR status -- a benchmark score of 75 or better. The U.S. food processing sector spends almost $7 billion a year on energy, while the glass industry spends more than $2 billion a year on energy.

Companies such as ConAgra, Simplot, Del Monte Foods, Campbells Soup, General Mills, Heinz, Kellogg and Kraft, among others, have received ENERGY STAR awards for food processing facilities.

If your facility or your customers are already pursuing motor management the new ENERGY STAR performance indicators also provide an opportunity to track progress and measure success against a baseline.

DOE Industrial Technologies Program: Updated State Incentives and Resources Database Web Site

The Department of Energy State Incentives and Resources Database on the State & Utilities Partnerships Web site has been upgraded and rereleased. The Web site now contains 2,751 entries where commercial and industrial managers interested in reducing the energy consumption of their businesses or facilities can access an online library of energy incentives, tools, and resources. The database features information on incentives available from states, utilities and non-profit organizations, including rebates, waived fees, tax credits, and loans. The site also offers such resources as analysis tools, education and training programs, and energy audits.

EPA Unveils New Portfolio Manager Reports

Users of the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager energy benchmarking tool now have access to enhanced reporting of building and portfolio data with a new interactive tool: Portfolio Manager Reports. Portfolio Manager is a free software tool from EPA and ENERGY STAR that helps facility managers better understand the energy performance of their building or industrial facility. Portfolio Manager provides 1-100 benchmark scores for many different facility types, including: The new reporting feature will allow users to easily extract and display tables and graphs about their commercial buildings' energy and water performance. Use it to prioritize activities and investments, establish more robust benchmarks, report to other groups, and conduct comparative analysis.

November 19, 2 pm Eastern: Webcast – Introduction to EISA 2007: Motor Management in a Changing Marketplace

This Webcast will provide an overview of the Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007), which includes new federal minimum standards for electric motors. Session speakers will share information about what types of motors are included in the standards and the mandated efficiency levels for those motor types. The Webcast will also review the resources available from the Motor Decisions Matter (MDM) Campaign, with emphasis on the ways in which the MDM tools can help motor users communicate the concept of motor management and support repair-replace decisions in a changing marketplace. To participate, please RSVP to MDMInfo@cee1.org. Click here for more information...

Maintenance Technology magazine runs a monthly column ("Boosting Your Bottom Line") contributed by MDM project staff. The column provides a systematic discussion of motor management strategies ranging from motor planning to creating a spares inventory. The October issue included the article Motor Efficiency & Your Carbon Footprint, which explored the impact of motor efficiency on industrial facility carbon dioxide emissions and the role of motor management in reducing facilities’ direct and indirect carbon emissions. The August issue featured the article Bottom Line Benefits of Motor Management, which laid out the three steps to motor management and how the MDM tools can help.

The September issue of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society Journal featured the article Electric Motor$: Striving to Get the Best Value, which covered motor selection and motor maintenance considerations. The article mentions MDM as a public awareness campaign sponsored by a consortium of motor manufacturers, motor servicers and efficiency programs.
